Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (Rio de Janeiro)

The Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (CCBB Rio de Janeiro) is a large cultural space on Primeiro de Março Street, opposite Largo da Candelária, in Rio’s Central Zone. It houses exhibition rooms, a cinema, video screening room, three theaters, an auditorium, and a library. The building itself is notable for its old-fashioned elevators and preserved marble, columns, and dome.

A bit of history

The building was designed by architect Francisco Joaquim Béthencourt da Silva and construction began in 1880. It opened in 1906 as the headquarters of the Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro. Banco do Brasil bought it in the 1920s and turned it into its headquarters. The cultural center opened on October 12, 1989, the first in the CCBB network. The renovation kept the columns, ornaments, marble staircase, and dome.
